By Williams Gondwa:
Malawi Defence Force (MDF) sides, Red Lions and Cobbe Barracks, are pondering on the possibility of a merger, as they push for TNM Super League promotion.
Lions were relegated from the Super League last season, joining, in the Southern Region Premier Division, fellow MDF side, Cobbe Barracks.
MDF spokesperson, Paul Chiphwanya, was, as we went to press yesterday, not readily available to confirm the plans to merge the two teams into one entity.
Lions General Secretary, Davie Gondwe, said they want to join forces with Cobbe as it is impossible for them to field two teams from Zomba in the division.
Gondwe said they are discussing with MDF top officials in order to seek their green light.
“Red Lions and Cobbe Barracks come from one station, Cobbe, so we have plans to form one team since we are from one family. However, we are yet to get the go-ahead”.
“We need to select good players from both teams as we have earmarked March 1 to start our preparations. I hope forming one team will give us advantage of having a strong team in the premier division,” Gondwe said.
Last season, Cobbe finished on fourth position with 83 points in the Premier Division while Lions were relegated from the Super League after finishing on position 14 with 33 points.
