Red Lions geared to maintain lead

TNM Super League leaders, Red Lions, have downplayed changes to this weekend’s fixture, saying nothing will distract them from battling to maintain the lead.

The team was initially scheduled to face Silver Strikers at Civo Stadium but, instead, the Zomba-based soldiers will date Civil Sporting Club at the same venue.

Lions Coach, Mike Kumanga, admitted that the changes will have an effect on his team’s plans but he refused to dwell much on complaining.

“It has happened. We cannot change it. We only need to be focused so that we should win to stay at the top. Experience has taught me that it is important to make hay while the sun shines. I also know that a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. If our close contenders are not playing, it will be to our advantage to collect more points because chances are that they might slip,” he said in reference to Be Forward Wanderers and Silver Strikers, whose games have been rescheduled.

Lions top the table with 12 points whereas Wanderers lie second with the same number of points having played four games against Lions’ six.

Civil Coach, Franco Ndawa has promised to address the teams’ poor start to the season.

Lying on position 14 with four points from six games, Ndawa admits his team needs to wake up from their slumber to push forward.

“We don’t need to play with pressure if we are to get good results. Forcing results will not work,” he said.

In other games set for Saturday, Mzuni FC host Azam Tigers at Mzuzu Stadium while Blantyre United entertain Blue Eagles at MDC ground.

Action continues Sunday as defending champions Kamuzu Barracks clash with brothers-in-arms Moyale Barracks at Civo Stadium.
