Red Lions roar, Nomads drop points

Red Lions still lead the TNM Super League log table after edging out Dwangwa United 1-0 through McPeter Makwale’s goal at Balaka Stadium yesterday.

The Lions made the most of a slip up by Be Forward Wanderers, who dropped points following a goalless draw against Azam Tigers at MDC United also yesterday.

Wanderers, whose influential midfielders Joseph Kamwendo and Felix Zulu spurned scoring chances, dropped by a step to third place with 13 points from five games. Nonetheless, the Nomads are yet to concede in the league this season.

Wanderers, who were without rested key defender Stanley Sanudi, bombarded Tigers’ territory inside the opening five minutes with a succession of corner-kicks, but found goalkeeper Williams Thole so uncompromising.

Clifford Kankhuni also stifled Wanderers in midfield whereas Peter Wadabwa and Yamikani Chester’s combination upfront failed to trouble the Martin Chongwe’s marshalled defence.

In a post-match interview, Wanderers Coach, Yasin Osman, admitted that Tigers stopped the Nomads from playing their attacking game.

“We made the game difficult for ourselves. We had four clear cut chances and we should have won the game. I think we were just careless But that is football. The good thing is that we didn’t lose the game,” Osman said.

Tigers are on fourth place with 13 points from nine games whereas Premier Bet Wizards’ 1-0 win over Mzuni on Saturday pushed them to second place, at par on 15 points with the Lions. Chitipa United were not in action over the weekend and remain bottom with four points.
