Red Lions sack coaches

Red Lions have sacked coaches Collins Nkuna and Mike Kumanga following a poor run of form in the TNM Super League.

Lions treasurer, Wakisa Kaisi, on Wednesday in a diplomatic manner, said Nkuna, Kumanga and team manager Blackson Ziba, were redeployed to other Malawi Defence Force (MDF) assignments.

Following the technical shake-up, Pritchard Mwansa will head the panel in an interim capacity with Jafali Saizi doubling as assistant coach and goalkeeper trainer.

Kaisi said they hope the change will help Lions finish on a better position in the league. The team is currently seventh.

“The exercise is normal. The coaches have indeed been deployed to another assignment. The results in the league were not that good, so we had to make changes. In short, that is what I can say,” he said.

The former Moyale Barracks assistant coach, Nkuna confirmed yesterday that they were fired.

“We have just been briefed that we are no longer in-charge. We will wait for the deployment letter to see what is next for us. Maybe, we will be given another team as you know that the Malawi Defence Force has a lot of teams,” he said.

Lions lost to Moyale 3-1 at Balaka Stadium on Saturday. The Zomba soldiers have 30 points from 19 games. If they win their remaining nine games, they will finish the league with 57 points.

This season, Lions have endured a torrid run after their six players were suspended following violence that marred their game against Fisd Wizards (formerly Surestream) at Kamuzu Stadium.
