Referee earmarked for Zambia fight
Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) referee, Mbachichi Nyirenda, has been earmarked for an African Boxing Union (Abu) fight in Zambia on July 2.
Nyirenda, who is also former Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) general secretary, will officiate a 12-round flyweight contest between Zambian Alfred Muwowo and Hadji Juma of Tanzania.
However, according to boxrec.com, the fight is subject to Abu’s nod.
MPBCB President, Lonzoe Zimba, said it was a blessing that local referees were being recognised to handle high-profile fights.
“Our counterparts did not object when we nominated Mr Nyirenda for this task. They knew that he would deliver because he is qualified and, last May, he also attended an advanced course which World Boxing Council experts facilitated. Above all things, our counterparts know his track record,” he said.
Nyirenda said he was humbled to handle the Abu title fight.
“I promise to handle the fight by the rules. I will prepare myself so that I should not be overwhelmed by the task,” he said.
Other Malawians that have handled international fights include Zimba and former Maba president Jerome Waluza
