Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has asked the nation not to ridicule the team’s kit master Richard Justin Zawazawa.
Zawazawa, who is commonly called Dinho among his peers, has been trending on social media since the last contingent of the Malawi National Football Team left for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Some people have been making fun of him, describing him as a juju person (witch doctor) who is behind the team’s success after the Flames reached the Round of 16 for the first time.
Fam President Walter Nyamilandu said people should stop insulting Zawazawa.
“It is very unfortunate that some Malawians, especially these on the social media, rush in making conclusions about some personalities before getting to the gist of the matter.
“Richard Justin looks after all the national teams’ equipment. It is bad to portray him as such. He is a very busy and important man in the team. He is simply a hard worker,” Nyamilandu said.
The statements came after some senior Flames players, including Gabadinho Mhango and Gerald Phiri Junior, voiced out their concerns over the manner Zawazawa is being insulted.
Fam has also released a three -minute video clip showing how the kitmaster works.
This is Zawazawa’s first international trip.
Zawazawa started working as cleaner at Fam in 2007 before being promoted to kitmaster in recent years.
