The government has suspended this year’s memorial service for Reverend John Chilembwe due to Covid-19.
According to a statement which Secretary to the President and Cabinet Zanga- Zanga Chikhosi has signed, the government will also suspend, cancel or postpone all major public events as a measure to contain the further spread of coronavirus.
“As you are aware, the country is currently experiencing an upsurge of new Covid-19 infections at an alarming rate. Accordingly, government has put in place measures aimed at containing the further spread of the virus in order to preserve life. The measures will remain in force until the situation improves,” the statement reads.
The statement, however, indicates that John Chilembwe Day, which falls on January 15, remains a public holiday and that the country would quietly honour the reverend’s contribution to national freedom.
