Rhythms of the Rainforest Festival kicks off Friday

Rhythms of the Rainforest Festival, which is being held at Ntchisi Forest Lodge in Ntchisi District, starts Friday and ends on Sunday.

Organisers said on Tuesday that all was set for the festival, where patrons will experience garden gigs, sunset sessions, bonfire beats and jungle jamming.

Menes la Plume, who is one of the members of the organising team, said the festival has brought new things to the table this year.

“The programme will start on Friday [today] evening and run to Sunday. So we are geared for the festival and, apart from performances, people will have a chance to tour the forest,” Menes said.

Built in 1914, Ntchisi Forest Lodge has become one of the tourist attraction areas in Ntchisi as it is situated Ntchisi Rainforest.

Menes said this year’s acts include Waliko Makhala, who is ready to dish out his bush music, Rebecca Mwalwenje, Madalitso Band and George Kalukusha.

“We will also have traditional dances from the communities around Ntchisi Rainforest,” Menes said.

Makhala said yesterday that he was ready for the festival, which he described as unique.

“This is a festival happening in the forest where the sounds of our ancestors, fused with modern electric vibes, will echo in the forest with new creative ideas,” Makhala said.

He said Ntchisi Rainforest remains one of the must-see places in the country.

“The sunset in the rainforest is amazing, if not stunning. This is even enhanced by the acoustic, intimate sounds that are played on the rock. As such, there is no other place that offers a distinctive experience while connecting nature with humanity,” Makhala said.

He said the Rhythms of the Rainforest Festival brings community members together and raises awareness on the importance of forest conservation, which is one of the last and most stunning pieces of indigenous tropical rainforests in Malawi.

Menes said, after organising two successful editions in 2016 and 2017, they were looking forward to the best during the third edition.

Some of the acts who performed last year included Mwalwenje and Gasper Nali.
