Malawi national football team striker, Richard Mbulu, might, finally, be on his way to Europe in January, his agent, Bruno Morgado, has confirmed.
Contrary to an earlier arrangement that Mbulu would spend a season in Mozambique before joining Portuguese Second Division side, Sporting Club de Esmoriz, Morgado said such a move was not automatic.
He said clubs in Argentina and Belgium are also interested in the former Mafco striker, who was the TNM Super League’s top scorer last season.
“If there are better options around and the Portuguese team does not match the terms, he has the right to go elsewhere—he is a professional player. What I can say is that Mbulu is going to Belgium, Argentina or Portugal, but most probably to Portugal.
“We will study what is the best sporting career decision for him and transfer him to that destiny, but now it is premature. When we finalise negotiations, we will officially communicate as to which country he will be heading,” Morgado said.
He added that Mbulu’s contract with Mozambique’s club, Costa Do Sol, has not expired but the Mozambique side cannot prevent him from playing abroad.
Mbulu, who is in the country for off-season break, early this year signed a one-year contract with Costa Do Sol, in a move that was meant to prepare him for the challenge of playing in Portugal next season.
Mbulu said he was not ready to comment on his potential move to Europe.
But his manager, David Gulaimfa, though not specific on where Mbulu is heading to, said the former Mafco goal-poacher was in the country to finalise arrangements for the trip.
“There are a few things that have to take place before he flies to Europe. [There is an] administration arrangement, paperwork and also legal opinion from his legal officer,” Gulaimfa said.
Mafco Commandant Brigadier General, Swithun Mchungula, said when need arises, Malawi Defence Force Commander, Griffin Supuni-Phiri, would advise them on what to do if the player seeks a clearance.
