Malawi National Football Team and Baroka FC striker Richard Mbulu has opened up on his knack for scoring against Mamelodi Sundowns and, in particular, Denis Onyango.

Mbulu is yet to hit full stride in the DStv Premiership this season where his two goals in the league have highlighted both his and bottom-of-the-log Baroka FC’s domestic struggles this term.

In a strange contradiction to this run of form, both of the 28-year-old’s goals in the 2021-22 campaign have come against the reigning champions and current league-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and their veteran goalkeeper, Denis Onyango.

Mbulu also netted against Onyango in Malawi’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying win over Uganda in March last year in what has since proven to be the first blow in a running battle between the two African stars.

“It’s just the way it happens,” Mbulu tells KickOff. “It’s always when I’m playing Sundowns, and not just Sundowns, but Denis Onyango too.

“I’ve scored against him three times in the last year – once with the national team, then in the first round in the league and again in the second round. I just feel like I’m going to score, and you know that goalkeeper is one of the best in the PSL; so, for me, it feels really good.”

Mbulu’s first goal against Sundowns came in the form of a powerful effort in Baroka’s narrow 2-1 defeat in December before he topped that strike with a sensational long-range drive in the 1-1 draw between the two sides in February.

“I’m sure the one I scored in February is one of the best goals of my career,” the former Mafco (Malawi) and Costa do Sol (Mozambique) striker said.

“It was a good goal. In my head, I saw the goalkeeper was standing to the left and he was a little bit near-sided, so when I took the shot I thought, let me put it far post and it will go in, and then I saw that the ball was in the back of the net.”—KickOff
