Striker Richard Mbulu had a week to forget after failing to impress Zambia MTN League giants Zesco United during trials.
Mbulu has been a free agent since June this year after the expiry of his contract with relegated South African side Baroka FC.
The trials were an opportunity for Mbulu to find a new club but the former Mafco goal poacher saw his fortunes crumble like a house of cards after failing to impress in Zesco’s pre-season friendly against Green Eagles and other teams last week.
Zesco Public Relations Officer Desmond Katongo confirmed that the Zambian club has decided against signing the Malawian striker, who is a proven goal scorer.
“Mbulu was one of the players we invited for the tournament for assessment. There is no development beyond that and there are no prospects of signing him,” Katongo said.
He finished the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as the Flames’ top goal scorer having netted two goals but is slowly disappearing from the picture under Mario Marinica.
Former Malawi National Football Team coach Meck Mwase said Mbulu should not lose hope.
“He is a hard worker and a top striker. He should just work on his fitness and I am sure he will find himself a good club,” Mwase said.
