Richard Mbulu not panicking over goal-drought

Malawi national football team striker Richard Mbulu is yet to score for Baroka FC in South Africa Premier Soccer League.

Mbulu joined Baroka in June on a three-year deal from Mozambique’s Costa do Sol, alongside Flames attacker Gerald Phiri Junior after he was released by Ajax Cape Town.

The former Mafco FC striker has failed to score despite featuring in all six league matches for Baroka.

However, Phiri has a goal to his credit from a direct free kick to help Baroka defeat his former club Bidvest Wits 1-0 on August 6 at Bidvest Wits Stadium in Johannesburg.

Mbulu described the goal-drought as part of football.

“It is disappointing that I haven’t scored since arriving here. But that is what football is all about. If you watched all our games, you would have noticed that I have created a lot of assists for strikers to score. I know that my duty is to score and I need to do so. I will try my best,” Mbulu said.

Mbulu and Phiri featured for Baroka during their 2-1 loss to Highlands Park on Sunday at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Meanwhile, soccer analyst Willy Cham’bwinja has said Mbulu should not panic but keep working hard.

“Much as it is the role of a striker to score, Mbulu is doing a good job. With time, I am so sure he will get a goal,” Cham’bwinja said.

In a related development, Orlando Pirates forward Gabadinho Mhango came off the bench to score when they lost 4-3 to Wits on Sunday.

This was the second goal for Mhango since joining Pirates in June.
