Flames and Baroka FC striker Richard Mbulu had an outing of mixed fortunes when he scored and sustained an injury as his side got booted out of the Nedbank Cup on Monday.
Meanwhile, Mbulu has played down injury concerns after he was forced off the field at the break in a 5-4 loss on post-match penalties to Cape Town Spurs in a Round-of-32 match at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The former Mafco hitman scored with a powerful volley after getting on the end of compatriot Gerald Phiri Junior’s cross but got injured in the process.
He was substituted at the break as a precaution as Spurs levelled matters through Ashely Cupido in the second half.
Mbulu said he would be fit for the weekend match.
“It is not serious and I am fit now. But, of course, I am disappointed that we are out of the Nedbank Cup. We will now focus on the league,” said Mbulu, who has netted four goals for Baroka in the DStv Premiership this season.
However, he said he was disappointed that Baroka got knocked out.
This means that three Malawian players Gabadinho Mhango, Limbakani Mzava and Chawanangwa Kaonga are still in the competition after their teams sailed through to the Round-of-16.
Mhango scored the lone goal for Orlando Pirates as they beat National First Division side Uthongathi FC 1-0 on Saturday.
Mzava captained AmaZulu to a 5-4 victory over Golden Arrows on post-match penalties after playing out 1-1 in regulation time.
Kaonga’s TS Sporting won 5-4 on post-match penalties following a goalless draw with TS Galaxy on Saturday. But the Malawian did not feature.
Meanwhile, the performance of Mbulu and Mhango was encouraging and the duo will likely feature for the Flames when facing South Sudan and Uganda in the Africa Cup of Nations next month.
