By Williams Gondwa, In Durban South Africa:

Flames striker Richard Mbulu has said he sees his new South Africa Premier Soccer League side Baroka FC as a stepping stone to a bigger club.

Mbulu has joined Baroka on a three-year deal after leaving Mozambican top-flight side Costol do Sol.

The former Mafco player has scored once in two games at the Cosafa Cup in Durban, South Africa, and also won a penalty which Gerald Phiri Junior scored for Malawi to beat Namibia 2-1.

“I had some offers, including a possible move to Kaizer Chiefs, but it did not happen. So, if I work hard at Baroka, I can get a move to top teams overseas. My mission is to impress and make Baroka happy,” he said.

Mbulu, who scored in Malawi’s 3-0 over Seychelles, said the Flames were performing well because of unity and fighting spirit.

“We are listening to the coaches and are prepared to fight for each other. With this attitude, we can go all the way in the competition,” he said.

The 25-year-old striker also played for Portuguese lower division side Sanjoanense before making a U-turn to Costa do Sol.

In 2016, Mbulu lifted the TNM Super League Golden Boot award with 19 goals while playing for Mafco.
