Rim Industries aids journalists
Rim Industries, manufacturers of carbonated soft drinks and mineral water, Thursday donated some of its products towards the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) celebrations tomorrow in Lilongwe.
WPFD falls on May 3 every year, but Malawi will celebrate it Saturday.
Rim Industries’ president, Ali Ahmad, said he appreciates the contribution that journalists make to the growth of businesses in the country.
“Journalists play an important role in reaching out to everyone with information. As a business, we appreciate their efforts because our products can also be known to people out there through the media,” Ahmad said.
He added that he expects the company will continue strengthening its partnership with the media.
Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi Chapter outgoing chairperson, Thom Khanje, said several events will take place to mark the celebrations such that the donation of water and soft drinks could not have come at a better time.
“As the media converges on May 6 to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day, we expect close to 500 practitioners will be present because this is a very big day. Among other things, we will have a freedom march, an elective annual general meeting and a gala night and we will obviously need water and soft drinks,” Khanje said.
He added that the media will continue promoting businesses in the country because it has a role to play in boosting the economy.
This year’s WPFD is being commemorated under the theme ‘Critical minds for critical times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive society’.
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 WPFD to raise awareness on the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.
