The Roads Authority (RA) has said the section of Zalewa-Chingeni Road at Kam’mwamba in Neno, which was recently opened for public use, has been closed again to allow the contractor—Fargo Cons t ruct ion Company— to do good quality work.

According to some sources, the construction company used low-quality materials in its initial maintenance which did not satisfy the quality assurance system within the Authority.

The section in question was rehabilitated and opened but days later it was closed again, raising questions as to what might have happened.

RA Spokesperson, Portia Kajanga, said a K114 million emergency works contract on Zalewa Road was initially

supposed to be finished in 90 days from the end of November 2015 to the end of February 2016.

The contract is for installation of culverts which were vandalised in the section between Kam’mwamba and Phalula on the Zalewa Road.

Kajanga said out of the five spots within the section that the contractor is working on, three require major works since all the Armco Culverts were stolen.

“You may also wish to note that the same Fargo is working on another contract of rehabilitating the Zalewa to Chingeni section of the M1 road by among other things, re-sealing sections whose strength has been compromised, expanding busbays at all trading centres and sealing all shoulders with asphalt hot mix. This contract will finish in July, 2016,” Kajanga said.
