Robbers invade coach Chimodzi’s residence
As the Flames coach was busy with the national team in Egypt in an international friendly against the Pharaohs on Monday evening, back home armed robbers descended on his Area 3 house in Lilongwe, shot a security guard in the thigh and went away with cash amounting to K100,000.
Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, confirmed the development in an interview on Tuesday.
Dandaula said the incident happened at around 10:30pm.
The incident als o happened just a day after armed criminals shot dead a police officer in the city.
He said the two unknown armed robbers shot a security guard identified as Paul Chikaonda in the thigh and went away with K100,000 after they forced their way into the bedroom of the Flames coach.
“According to information we gathered, the two robbers invaded the house of Mr Chimodzi around 10:30pm and they shot a security guard in the thigh. They also went away with K100,000 cash which they stole from the wife of the Flames coach,” said Dandaula.
He said no arrests have been made as police were still investigating the matter. In an interview on Tuesday, Chimodzi’s wife also confirmed that two robbers invaded the house demanding US dollars cash from her.
“I saw two men armed with a gun and a panga knife forcing their way into the bedroom.
“They told me that they were looking for US dollars from me but I had only K100,000 cash and I gave them,” she said.
Chimodzi’s wife said the security guard was rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital for treatment.
However, his condition was not known as we went to press on Tuesday.
In January, about 15 thugs also invaded the house but they did not steal anything after they failed to force their way into the house.
Chimodzi is not the only high profile figure to be targetted by robbers in the country.
Last year, thugs also raided the house of Vice President Saulos Chilima and Minister of Home Affairs Atupele Muluzi.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) executive member James Mwenda also had his house raided by robbers.
