Robert Ng’ambi doubtful for Comoros match

With only two days to go before the Malawi National Football Team takes on Comoros Island in the Total Africa Cup of Nations, coach Ronny Van Geneugden is putting his fingers crossed over the availability of South Africa-based attacking midfielder, Robert Ng’ambi.

Ng’ambi, who plays for Platinum Stars, is doubtful for Saturday’s match as his wife was involved in a road accident on Monday while he was in Tunisia for a Caf Confederation Cup assignment where his Platinum Stars lost 3-0 against CS Sfaxien.

Football Association of Malawi Chief Executive Officer, Alfred Gunda, said while Ng’ambi will be an important addition to the team, it was pleasing that other foreign-based players like Limbikani Mzava, Gerard Phiri Junior, Owen Chaima and Gabadinho Mhango had reported last weekend.

Gunda said Richard Mbulu, Frank Banda, John Banda and Charles Swine were expected to arrive yesterday through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe from Mozambique to join the rest of the team.

Gunda said he was not sure about the availability of Ng’ambi after receiving news that his wife was involved in a road accident.

He said the former Big Bullets midfielder was initially expected to arrive today but will communicate on his position once he assesses his wife’s condition upon arrival in South Africa.

“If you noticed during the Airtel Top 8 Cup final, we had Gabadinho, Mzava and Phiri Jnr and they are with the team in Lilongwe,” said Gunda.

Morocco and Cameroon are the other two teams in Malawi’s group.
