Robert Ng’ambi, Gabadinho star in Caf games
Flames’ midfielder Robert Ng’ambi and striker Gabadhino Mhango scored for their respective South African clubs in Confederation of African Football (Caf) games on Saturday.
Ng’ambi came off the bench to score for Platinum Stars as they got the better of Uniao Do Songo of Mozambique in a preliminary round, first-leg clash of the Confederations Cup at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in South Africa.
After a barren first-half, Ng’ambi replaced Siyabona Zulu before the start of the second-half then grabbed the winner.
The Mozambican team’s squad comprises Charles Swini and Frank Banda, formerly of Silver Strikers.
The second leg will be played in Maputo after two weeks.
However, there was no Stars’ place for another Malawian Gerald Phiri Jnr as he is reportedly not registered for the competition.
Phiri had a grand debut in a mid-week league match as Stars drew 0-0 against Orlando Pirates.
In other matches, Lawrence Majawa’s Township Rollers lost 2-1 to hosts CNaPS Sport of Madagascar in a Champions League game.
In another Champions League match, Mhango scored the consolation for Bidvest Wits as they lost 1-2 away to Reunion’s Saint-Louisienne on Saturday.
It was Mhango’s third goal in two games have also grabbed a double on Wednesday when Wits thrashed Ajax Cape Town in Johannesburg in a league match.
