Robert Ng’ambi gets 1st Premier Soccer League win
Four Malawian players were in action on Tuesday and Wednesday in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL), with teams involving Malawians registering mixed fortunes.
Midfielder Robert Ng’ambi played for 90 minutes as Platinum Stars won for the first time this season, beating Ajax Cape Town 1-0 through Captain Vuyo Mere’s free-kick goal in the 51st minute at Royal Bafokeng Palace on Wednesday night.
Stars are bottom with seven points from 10 games, three points behind defending champions, Bidvest Wits, who lost 2-0 to Chippa United also on Wednesday night.
Winger Gerald Phiri Junior replaced Vincent Pule in the 75th minute but the Flames’ free-kick specialist could not prevent Wits from losing 2-0 to Chippa at Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg.
Samuel Julies scored both goals for Chippa.
Still in South Africa, Bloemfontein Celtic are fourth on the log table with 15 points from 10 games after seeing off Maritzburg United 1-0 on Tuesday night, thanks to Jacy Motsegwa’s goal.
Celtic, whose Assistant Coach is Malawian John Maduka, threw into action the Flames’ discarded striker Atusaye Nyondo in the last nine minutes at Dr Molemela Stadium in Free State Province.
Second-placed Golden Arrows, featuring in defence the Flames Captain Limbikani Mzava, lost 3-0 to SuperSport United at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.
Reneilwe Letsholonyane’s strike and Aubrey Modiba’s brace floored Arrows in Mpumalanga province.
