The burial ceremony of Malawi’s first female cabinet minister Rose Chibambo has been shifted from Friday to Saturday because of John Chilembwe celebrations, The Daily Times has learnt.
Both government spokesperson Jappie Mhango and a family member, Ziliro Chibambo confirmed the development, saying Chibambo will be accorded a state funeral.
“We were supposed to bury her on Friday but because of John Chilembwe celebrations, there are some government officials who would like to attend the burial ceremony and they did ask the family if we could change the burial day. So Mama Rose [Chibambo] will be buried on Saturday at Chibambo’s Village, Chief Mtwalo in Mzimba District,” disclosed Ziliro Chibambo.
He said as a family they are shocked with the passing on of Rose Chibambo because she was their mother, and that the country has lost an icon who contributed in liberating the country from the colonialists.
But Mhango sounded doubtful if President Peter Mutharika would attend the burial ceremony, asking for more time to consult.
Chibambo, who was born on September 8, 1928, died on Tuesday morning at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre due to heart complications.
Chibambo studied Adult and General Education in Britain. She was the first woman in the Nyasaland African Congress Executive. Chibambo was also the founder and leader of Women’s League.
