Mzuzu City Council has identified a new heroes ’ acre near Mzuzu Agriculture Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) Depot for burial of Malawi’s heroes and heroines and the late Rose Chibambo will be the first to be buried at the site.

But government says it is not aware of the proposed heroes’ acre in Mzuzu.

Mzuzu City Council Chief Executive Officer, Macloud Kadammanja, said the council felt necessary to have a heroes acre in the city.

A family member, Ziliro Chibambo, confirmed the arrangement yesterday.

“As a family, we welcome the decision because this is in recognition of the roles that she played in this country. But we have not been communicated to whether the President will attend or not. But what I know is that the Vice President Saulos Chilima did indicate that he would attend the funeral ceremony,” confirmed Chibambo.

Asked if Chihana will be transferred to the new place, Kadammanja said it will depend on the direction government and the family will give.

However, Information Minister of Jappie Mhango expressed ignorance of the arrangement.

“As government, we have not received any proposal for heroes acre. I am not aware of the new heroes acre in Mzuzu. It would not be ideal to have many heroes acres. But let me say that, should the proposal come to government, people will be consulted,” Mhango said.

The Minister, however, said Chibambo will be accorded a State funeral with the Malawi Defence Force handling proceedings and giving her a gun salute.

Chibambo’s nephew Osizani Ziba said Chibambo told them in advance that she was to be buried in Mzuzu but did not give reasons.

Chibambo, the first woman cabinet minister in independent Malawi, died on Tuesday morning at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre due to heart complications. She was 87.
