Rough diamond Phodo heads to South Africa


A window of opportunity has opened for Silver Strikers prolific forward Maxwell Gasten Phodo who has been invited for trials at DSTV Premiership side Marumo Gallants FC in South Africa.
Gallants, formerly Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC, have written Silver expressing interest to assess the current TNM Super League leading goal scorer.
Silver Chief Executive Officer Thokozani Chimbali confirmed Friday.
“Actually, they want him as soon as possible. We are waiting for them to give us exact date so that we release him,” Chimbali said.
A letter from Gallants FC, which Malawi News has seen, confirmed Gallants interest in the player.
“We wish to invite him to attend trials at our club, for a period of 10 days with effect to travel to South Africa as soon as possible,” reads the letter from Gallants.
Gallants will play in the Caf Confederation Cup after winning the Ned Bank Cup last season.
The former Mzuzu Warriors and Dedza Young Soccer striker has been phenomenal in the league scoring 12 goals two above of second-placed Nyasa Big Bullets striker Hassan Kajoke.
Phodo is the only player who has scored two hat-tricks this season.
Football analyst, George Kaudza-Masina said Phodo was a raw diamond.
“He is a gem who just needs polishing. South African teams have good facilities and they can polish the guy into a top a striker. This is a chance for him to advance his career,” Kaudza-Masina said.
His form has also caught the attention of some teams in South Africa.
Some Malawian players ply their trade in the DSTV Premiership including Flames captain Limbikani Mzava of Amazulu and Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mhango whereas Gerald Phiri Junior and Richard Mbulu play for Baroka FC.
Striker Khuda Muyaba and defender Dennis Chembezi play for Glad Africa Championship side Polokwane City whereas Chawanangwa Kaonga is at TS Sporting FC.
