Roza Mbilizi is queen of TNM Golf
On a mildly sizzling Saturday afternoon, Roza Mbilizi rose above the weather adversity to win the inaugural 2016 TNM-sponsored ladies’ golf tournament at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) after posting a net of 68 points.
The 10-handicap Mbilizi initially posted a gross of 78 points, but her good handicap helped her beat 11 other lady golfers that played in the tournament.
Playing off handicap 24, Margaret Mukwena finished second after posting a net of 76 points from a gross of 100.
The club’s ladies’ golf captain, Connie Muguvu- Karuku, finished third with a net of 79 points. The 17-handicap captain had grossed 96 points.
The tournament was also used to scout for young talent that would represent the country during an international tournament this December.
Thus six girls also competed in the junior ladies’ category.
Thirteen-year old Soche-based, Vanessa Matupa, won the category with a gross of 64 points, beating her closest competitor, Kate Chapola.
Karuku had a lot of praise for Matupa.
“She comes from a less-privileged background and walks to the club to play the game. Her skills give us confidence that we will have a top lady golfer in the future,” she said.
In support of the ladies’ golf section, 46 men also competed in the tournament.
Davlin Chokazinga won the men’s division with a net of 68 points after counting in George Chirwa.
Lilongwe-based golfer, Patridge Shycal, was counted out by Chirwa to finish third.
In the subsidiary prizes, Nester Msowoya won the two club on the fifth.
Shycal won the nearest to pin on hole number 12 while Tarang Makhecha had the longest drive on the third.
In the ladies’ division, Mbilizi had the longest drive on the 17th.
Margaret Mkwanda had the nearest to the pin on the 14th.
TNM’s chief commercial officer, Daniel Makata, said the company would continue supporting ladies’ golf to help produce more lady golfers.
“We are thrilled with the turnout during the first of a series of our tournaments this year. Men also came to support the ladies and that pleases us. We are specifically happy that young girls also played in this tournament. That is what we want. We want more girls and ladies to play golf,” he said.
