Musician Rudo Mkukupa Chakwera gave people a Christmas gift when she dropped Christmas carols in Chichewa album.
With Christians around the world celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, Rudo decided to release the album on the same day.
The singer, who has been out of the stage for some time and is well known for songs such as ‘Anatifera’ and ‘Mwana Wamasiye’, said Wednesday she saw a gap in terms of having Christmas carols in Chichewa hence working on the album.
The album titled ‘Merry Christmas’ with Love has seven songs and was produced at GL Records in Lilongwe.
Some of the Christmas carols in the collection are ‘Amithenga A Mulungu’ (Hark the Herald Angels), ‘Mukhola la Ng’ombe’ (Away in a Manger), ‘Ng’oma Yanga’ (Little Drummer), ‘Mwana wa Lonjezo’ (Child Promise), ‘Usiku Woyerawo’ (Silent Night), ‘Chikondi Chodabwitsa’ (Amazing Love) and ‘Oona Mumtima’ ( O Come All Ye Faithful).
She said she put in extra effort into the album and called on people to buy original copies.
“I was working until late, odd hours and even through the night to the next day to finalise it. However, it took me less than two weeks because most of the songs are covers. All I did was to work on the arrangements that I was thinking of,” Rudo said.
A holder of Bachelor of Arts Degree from University of Malawi’s– Chancellor College with a double major in music and drama, Rudo said, for a longtime, people have been listening to Christmas carols in English and other languages.
“I have always wanted to hear something done in my language and so I said if nobody is doing it, then I should be the one to answer my own cry. Again, because this year I was not going to do any Christmas concert, I thought a Christmas album would be a great gift to people,” she said.
Born in a musical family to the iconic jazz maestro Isaac Mkukupa, Rudo is also currently consulting part time lecturer at Chancellor College.
The artist recently announced that she had worked on a song with Annie Matumbi focusing on next year’s elections.
Rudo last weekend, through Touch Entertainment also started the In the Spotlight Auditions with the aim of unearthing talent.
Meanwhile musician and dancer, Wendy Harawa, who also turned born again also released a gospel track ‘Mundisunge Ndinu’ on Christmas.
Peter Mawanga has also this festive season released a new album ‘Nyanja Vibes’
