Rudo takes mental health awareness to Maula Prison

DONATION—Rudo and husband donates some of the items
Gospel musician Rudo Mkukupa Chakwera has called upon players in various sectors, including churches and communities, to start addressing mental health as a serious issue.
She said this in Lilongwe at Maula Prison’s Young Reformatory Section where, apart from donating assorted items to inmates, she also held a special mental health awareness talk.
“This is an on-going campaign. Everyone can play a part, from the church to communities. We need to seriously talk about mental health,” she said.
Rudo also visited the main prison facility to cheer inmates.
“When behind these fences, people feel like they have been forgotten but we are there to support each other. Malawi has been hit with suicidal deaths. People are at a standstill trying to figure out life. We wanted to bring happiness to the hopeless,” she said.
The musician, supported by her husband and friends, donated, among others; uniforms and buckets to the inmates.
“The focus is not the amount of money but the support. I thought it was important to celebrate my birthday and Christmas and the festive season as a whole with those that don’t have a chance to be with their families and friends,” Rudo said.
She said during the visit, they also had time to pray, sing and dance as well as praise God for the gift of life.
One of the inmates Wilba Zambiki hailed Rudo for the gesture.
