Rui Araujo, Karuku win National Bank golf

Imperious Rui Araujo and Connie Karuku displayed outstanding golfing skills to win National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Golf Tournament at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) on Saturday.

Araujo scored 40 points to emerge the champion in the men’s section.

Renowned golfer Gabriel Kambale, playing off handicap four, finished on second position with 39 points. He received a trophy and a bicycle.

Angelo Ali, playing off handicap 24, ended on third position with 38 points. He received a driver and a trophy.

Araujo said it was not surprising that he won the tournament.

“It is not by fluke that I have won. I am playing well and I have been consistent. I won Nico General Tournament in Nchalo and I also performed well in Mzuzu. In the ongoing TNM Match-play, I have also reached the semi-finals. This proves that I am consistent,” he said.

In the individual men’s category, Frank Jomo won the nearest to the pin on hole 10.

In the ladies’ section, Karuku was simply unplayable as she dominated the competition.

Despite dropping from handicap 15 to 17, Karuku won the ladies’ section with 36 points. She also hit the longest drive on hole eight and nearest to the pin on hole 14.

“This was one of my best performances. The golf course was very well but I wouldn’t say much about the fairway,” she said.

Joline Pereira, playing off handicap 19, finished as the runner-up with 33 points whereas Carol Banda, with 20-handicap, scored 32 points to end on third position.

In the seniors’ category, Chimdima Mhango, playing off handicap eight, scored 34 points to emerge the winner.

The tournament attracted 91 golfers.

NBM Chief Executive Officer, Mcfussy Kawawa, presented a K350,000 donation to BSC for the maintenance of the greens.

“We are encouraged by the turnout, not that we doubted but we are very happy that it was oversubscribed, which is a rare thing at Blantyre Sports Club.

“During the prize presentation, I mentioned something about credit card. It is a product that we are proud of as a bank. It is a card that offers convenience. It also offers up to 45 days interest-free credit. It also affords ready encashment if somebody has an emergency of some sort and they don’t have to make further application for a loan,” Kawawa said.
