Russia supports Malawi’s disaster response

By Audrey Kapalamula:

Russia has become the latest international partner to support the government’s floods response, providing 30 tonnes of relief items.

The items arrived in the country Monday through Kamuzu International Airport.

Russian Federation Ambassador to Zimbabwe and Malawi, Sergey Bakharev, said his government felt duty-bound to come to Malawi’s rescue.

“We felt it wise to express sympathy and condolence to President Peter Mutharika. We tried to consider how we could assist our Malawian friends. Malawi is our friend and a friend in need is a friend indeed; that is why we thought of providing the items,” he said.

The items include cooking oil, cane products, blankets, bales of sugar and tents.

Homeland Security Minister, Nicholas Dausi, said the items would help affected people who are relocating to upper lands.

“These people, once they relocate, will need shelter and other forms of assistance.

“We are, therefore, thankful for the humanitarian gesture. We will make sure that the tents help us in redesigning, reconstructing and resettling people who are in camps. We have over a million people spread across 67 scattered camps in the country,” he said

The government this week said it needed over K90 billion for resettlement of internally.
