Ruth Chisale for WBC fight
Budding boxer Ruth Chisale has a chance to challenge Zambian, Loreta Muzeya, for a World Boxing Council (Africa) elimination fight later this year at a venue to be announced.
Malawi Boxing Professional Control Board President, Lonzoe Zimba, confirmed to have brokered the bout at the ongoing WBC Convention in Baku, Azerbaijan.
“The winner will then challenge for a WBC gold title,” Zimba said in an interview from Baku.
He said Chisale was considered for the bout following her outstanding performance in June when she handed Ornella Domini her first professional defeat in Geneva, Switzerland in June.
Chisale remains unbeaten, having improved her record to seven straight wins.
“This is a more serious route because we are following each step required to enable our boxer to vie for a WBC belt. First, she needs to win the elimination fight,” Zimba said.
He added that WBC would also offer Chisale’s compatriot, Anisha Basheer, a chance to vie for a WBC fight.
Zimba said he is dating former top and current boxers at the convention to consider assisting Malawi with technical expertise.
“I have had several meetings with top boxers [and managers], and once we formalise everything, we will notify you. So far, some of the boxing officials have promised to host our coaches, but, for now, it is all verbal,” he said.
