Sadc laments lowering regional food output
Southern African Development Community (Sadc) has challenged member-states to consider implementing comprehensive multi-year response plans in tackling food insecurity.
Sadc says countries also need to develop sustainable mechanisms in crop production.
A communiqué issued at end of the 39th Sadc Summit in Tanzania says there was an overall decline in food production in the region during the 2018/19 season which poses a threat to most economies.
Second round crop estimates, however, show that the country expects a surplus of 355 000 metric tonnes this year.
The Sadc communiqué indicates the region continues to export raw material to the rest of the world, thereby forfeiting its potential.
“Summit noted progress made on the implementation of the Sadc Industrialisation Strategy and approved the Protocol on Industry, which aims to promote the development of a diversified, innovative and globally competitive industrial base,” the communiqué in part reads.
Meanwhile, the block has agreed to lift sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe to facilitate socio-economic recovery in that country.
Tanzania President, John Magufuli, was elected Sadc Chairperson.
