Sadc Speakers forum postponed

The Southern African Development Community (Sadc) conference for speakers of Parliament, which was to take place in Mangochi from September 30 to October 2, has been postponed, Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya said Tuesday.

Msowoya said the Speakers Forum could not take place because president of the forum, the Speaker of Angola’s Parliament, was tied up with elections in his country.

“As you might be aware, there were elections in Angola recently so he was just putting his house in order. The conference will be held later,” Msowoya said.

He said the conference discusses issues affecting ordinary people in the Sadc region.

“We always discuss pertinent issues that affect our people, ordinary people, in our countries so such conferences are very important to us and the people,” he said.

Msowoya could, however, not over say when the conference would take place, saying the president of the parliamentary Sadc forum would communicate.

An official from parliament said the conference was cancelled after preparations had been made and that only six out of the 15 speakers had confirmed attendance.
