Malawi Congress Party (MCP) second secretary general, Salim Bagus, has dumped the main opposition party and relinquished his position as shadow member of Parliament (MP) for Chikwawa Central Constituency.
In a statement released Thursday, Bagus, who has also withdrawn his MCP membership, says he quit the party on personal grounds.
In an interview, Bagus said he was weighing options on whether to join another party or be an independent shadow MP.
“You see, I have moved from the party on personal grounds which I cannot disclose, but, if there would be need in future, I would explain,” he said.
MCP publicity secretary, Maurice Munthali, Thursday confirmed the development of Bagus, who also served as MP for the constituency between 1999 and 2004 during the United Democratic Front-led government.
“Suffice to say though that, we, as MCP, are surprised that honourable Bagus has chosen to resign in a manner he has. The party, through the last convention entrusted him with a very key responsibility as second deputy secretary general, signifying the trust the party had and still has in him. We thank him for the services he has rendered to the party during the time he was with us,” he said.
Before joining MCP last year, Bagus worked with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and People’s Party.
