There was drama on Sunday afternoon during an international non-title bout at the BAT Ground in Blantyre as Malawi’s Salim Chazama was controversially declared the winner after knocking out Tanzania’s Mwinyi Mzengela.

After referee, Mbachichi Nyirenda, had stopped the fight in the second round, Chazama threw a punch that caught Mzengela by surprise. In no time, he was lying flat on the canvas.

Mzengela could be heard shouting “No! No!”, expressing his dissatisfaction with the role which the referee played.

The referee asked Mlengela to continue with the fight but he refused. Chazama was eventually declared the winner and he was delighted.

“I won the fight and I don’t want to waste time on his complaints as I would like to concentrate on other important things that will advance my boxing career,” Chazama said.

Nyirenda said there was nothing wrong with what happened as according to the rules, boxers are supposed to protect themselves at all times.
