Promising boxer Alexander Likande was the most frustrated figure after a non-title bout against Salimu Chazama ended in chaos at M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe on Sunday.

Rival fans invaded the ring and caused havoc as they exchanged punches to force the referee to stop the contest. It all started in the seventh round when Chazama sent Likande to the corner with powerful punches. Likande had dominated the first six rounds of the scheduled eight.

Sensing danger, one of his cornermen Yamikani Mkandawire stormed the ring and disrupted the contest, triggering chaos. In all fairness, Likande was destined for victory but switched off in round number seven allowing his opponent to up the tempo and nearly knock him.

The situation forced the contest to end pre-maturely and judges declared Chazama the winner through Technical Knock Out.

After the bout, Likande was disappointed with the result.

“I hope everyone saw that. I dominated the bout but suddenly other people decided in their own way. I gave him some boxing lessons. I want a rematch but at a neutral venue,” he said.

While Likande was grinding his teeth, Chazama was over the moon for bouncing back.

“I am excited with the victory. Likande came hard on me but I was calm as I used my experience to win the bout,” he said.

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBC) President Lonzoe Zimba said he was not amused with the fracas.

“As a board, we will take unspecified action on some of the boxers who were involved in the fracas. Boxing is a sport so people should be able to accept the results,” Zimba said.

It was the first boxing contest after almost 10 months as sports was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic in March this year.
