CHALLENGED—Kanyenda

Newly appointed Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) technical director Sam Kanyenda has said he is happy with his new post.

Kanyenda’s appointment is effective May 1 this year but he was served with appointment letter on Saturday.

“I am really delighted with the role I have been given. I know it is a challenging job because I have to look at different areas like players and coaches development. I will look at youth structures to make sure that we have good players at all levels be it junior or senior,” he said.

The Blue Eagles Sisters coach said he would work jointly with all stakeholders to ensure that the sport develops.

“I will have to consult widely and design a proper program to groom players and also see that our coaches are well trained,” he said.

Kanyenda has had stints with the Malawi national netball team in various capacities including coach and assistant coach.

He last coached the Queens in 2017 when he left his post after Nam had left out Australia based top shooter Mwawi Kumwenda from the squad that was bound for Fast5 Netball World Series in Melbourne, Australia.

Nam dropped Mwawi from the team for reporting late for training and in protest Kanyenda withdrew from the senior side leaving behind Mary Waya to take charge of the team.

Meanwhile, Nam in its letter addressed to Kanyenda, said the association appointed the coach because of his passion towards the game.

“The decision has been in light of passion that you continuously demonstrate in the game of netball, and in recognition of your education and professional background,” read part of the letter dated May 1, 2020 and signed by Nam’s president Khungekile Matiya.

“Be informed that the position is voluntary basis. However, Nam will reimburse actual expenses incurred to discharge your responsibilities on behalf of the association. Further, any benefits in terms of allowances will be provided in line with the association’s scale of benefits.”
