Sports Perspective: Sammy Chilunga must prune bad apples

Reports that there is a widening gulf between Nyasa Big Bullets chairperson, Sammy Chilunga, and a faction in his executive committee, smack of a lack of seriousness, especially now that the club has just secured lucrative five-year sponsorship worth K500 million.

The wrangle borders on administrative issues. The warring faction claims that Chilunga is ruling the club unilaterally while the chairperson argues that they are subversive elements who want to derail his administration.

He claims that people have been questioning his decision to buy players, and also to offer 60 percent of the TNM Super League prize money to the squad.

Other sources disclosed that the splinter group is not amused with the finance committee set up by Chilunga, and constitutionally, it is supposed to report to the board.

Chilunga was reported to have threatened to deal with all the people who want to derail his administration.

This has prompted Big Bullets FC board of trustee chairperson, James Busile, to warn Chilunga to exercise caution when dealing with what he called “sensitive issues” and he was reported to have summoned him to appear before the board of trustees.

I find it funny and awkward for the trustees’ chairperson to summon Chilunga on an issue he is trying to stamp his authority on.

If indeed there are some people who are throwing spanners into his works, he is justified to deal with them.

It seems there are people who are desperate to run the club just because it has secured sponsorship. If at all, these people were courageous why did they not take over administration of the club when former chairperson, Kondi Msugama, resigned?

Why did the Bullets family head-hunt a chairperson?

There is no administration which is perfect. Chilunga, just like any other person, Busile and his fellow trustees, also have problems, but the best way is contact and dialogue.

Chilunga’s works are speaking for themselves; you do not need rocket science to know that Bullets are on the right track.

This is the club that was alarmingly on the decline, and it was nearly shut down by creditors, but now slowly it is bouncing back to the acme of the society.

Busile and his fellow trustees know the confusionists in this club, and those are the people he needs to summon. It is high time Chilunga pruned these liabilities, who were part of the ‘katapila dynasty’ otherwise the club cannot prosper with such bad apples in the basket.
