Sand Music Fest in early preps

Organisers of festivals in the country seem to have woken up from their slumber as many have come out to declare that they have started preparing earlier than usual.

This contradicts practices in the past, when some festival organisers were fond of making eleventh hour calls for artists.

One of the festivals that have pushed for early preparations is Sand Music Festival, headed by musician Lucius Banda, popularly known as Soldier.

Lucius said Wednesday that they want to do things better this year; hence, making early preparations.

“We want to make sure that, by the time we hit the month of the festival, we should have finished 90 percent of the work. The previous outings have taught us a lot and, as such, we want to keep on improving,” Lucius said.

He said they have started holding meetings with some of the potential sponsors for the festival.

“I was in Blantyre last weekend where I was holding meetings with some of the sponsors and the outcome is positive,” he said.

Lucius, who is basking in the glory of releasing a new album Crimes, which has won him the hearts of people, said festival would be held at Sunbird Livingstonia in Salima the month end of October.

“We want to be consistent on the venue and, so, we are sticking to Sunbird Livingstonia in Salima. You will notice that we have not changed the venue for the past two to three years,” Lucius said.

He said the festival would be held from October 26 to 28.

Last year, the festival saw performances from, among other artists, Congolese star Awilo Longomba, who failed to live up to his billing.

Lucius said they are targeting Jamaica and Nigeria for international acts as well as giving a platform to more local musicians.

“We have stepped up our gears just to make sure we should have a good line-up. We have sent out a call for musicians to apply and we want to give opportunities to new artists,” he said.

Apart from Lake of Stars Festival, which will this year be held at Kabumba Hotel in Salima, and Blantyre Arts Festival, Sand Music Festival has stood out as one of the most important annual festivals.
