Former Be Forward Wanderers star defender, George Sangala, has expressed sat isfaction with footbal l standards among young players in Mzimba District.

Speaking after a talent scouting exercise over the weekend at Emfeni in the district, Sangala said it was exciting to see players aged between 15 and 20 displaying rare skills despite being trained by unqualified coaches.

“We had over 60 players who came to attend these trials but we wanted only 25. Selecting the best players was not easy as the talent was there in abundance. I have a feeling that we needed more time to look at other players,” he said.

Sangala travelled to the Northern Region district with one of defunct Surestream Football Academy’s coaches, Honest Nkhwazi, on Friday and conducted the trials on Saturday.

Nkhwazi said he was impressed with how the young players expressed themselves on the pitch.

“You would ordinarily expect players from such a remote area to be found wanting in major aspects of the game but what we saw is amazing. These players only need to be encouraged and they have the potential to go far,” he said.

United Kingdom-based Malawian, Danass Chirwa- Maddison, sponsored the two coaches to help her assemble a select youth side for the area which is her home village.

“I have known the two coaches to be very passionate about youth football. Sangala has a youth team in Phalombe while Nkhwazi nurtures young talent in Kasungu. So I wanted them to do the same in my home village. I have decided to name this team Finham FC,” Chirwa- Maddison said.

She said her ult imate goal was to organise a youth tournament involving teams from different parts of the country.
