Sankhani Nyirenda linked with Leopards
Former Big Bullets FC striker Sankhani Nyirenda has been linked with a move to South Africa’s Mvera League outfit Black Leopards, dismissing speculation he intends to re-join his former club.
Nyirenda has been training with the People’s Team since he returned from Mozambique towards the end of last month upon the expiry of his six-month contract with Ferroviario de Beira.
Speculation has been rife that negotiations between the player and Big Bullets FC were at an advanced stage for a possible return, but he said he only requested authorities at the club to be training with them in order to keep himself in shape for a prospective deal at Black Leopards in June.
Former Big Bullets FC chairman, Kondi Msungama, who facilitated his two-week trials in February, briefly confirmed about Sankhani’s move, saying ‘the coach was impressed with him out of the four other players who were also on trials’.
The player has told The Daily Times that he would put extra effort to don the black and gold jersey for the Leopards.
Flames international defender, Harry Nyirenda (not related) is the only Malawian player who has managed to make the grade at Leopards as he enters into his fourth successive season whilst Dave Banda, Grant Lungu and Bernard Harawa all returned after failing to impress.
But Nyirenda was optimistic he would withstand the heat because the five years he spent in Mozambique had shaped his career.
Sankhani Nyirenda established himself as one of the reliable forwards in his first season with Big Bullets FC, a team he joined in 2009, and was part of the team that lost in the final of the Standard Bank Cup to eventual winners Moyale Barracks.
His football career flourished at the sensational-but-now defunct Eagle Beaks squad where he played alongside Ken Mponda, late Sadani Mangwere and Harry Nyirenda.
In 2010, he trekked to Mozambique where he played for Ferroviario de Nampula, Ferroviario de Maputo and ended his five-year romance with Mozambican football at Ferroviario de Beira where he signed a six-month contract that expired in December last year.
