Saulos Chilima appeals for support to disaster victims
Vice-President Saulos Chilima has appealed to non-governmental organisations and people of goodwill to support victims of recent floods and heavy winds.
Speaking when he visited some of the affected families in Nkhotakota District, Chilima said nobody expects disaster and prepares for it.
About 1,266 households have been affected in the district.
“So, I appeal to organisations and all stakeholders to come forward and help,” he said.
Chilima consoled the affected families and pledged to support them.
“We also know that some of you were hit by the dry spells and the fall armyworm. Shortly, we will release the figure of people who are going to be food insecure and be assured that nobody will die of hunger,” he said.
Chilima said cases of natural disasters are on the rise in Malawi and across the world, suggesting that Malawians should embrace irrigation to mitigate the impact of such disasters.
Nkhotakota District Commissioner, Felix Mkandawire, said they continue registering names of affected people.
He added that the number of victims is likely to increase.
