Vice-President Saulos Chilima says M1 Road rehabilitation preparations are at an advanced stage.
He said this at Mzuzu Mall Round-about Sunday, when hundreds of supporters welcomed him to the Northern Region.
The Vice President is in the Northern Region for reform programme review meetings with local councils.
He is visiting the region after engaging in similar assignments in the Southern and Central regions.
“All the promises we made will be fulfilled. We are talking about job creation, among others. You might recall that when the President [Lazarus Chakwera] was here, he also spoke on the same. Slowly, we will manage to deliver all the promises. We know the road from Karonga is very bad but let me assure you that money is now there and works will commence soon,” Chilima said.
He is expected to start review meetings with Chitipa District Council today.
According to the Roads Authority, rehabilitation of the M1 Road is scheduled to start next month as the European Investment Bank (EIB) is still scrutinising contractors to be engaged in the project, which has been divided into four sections.
The four sections comprise approximately 301 kilometres from Kamuzu International Airport Turn-off to Kasungu, then from Kasungu to Jenda, from Jenda to the turn-off to Mzimba and from Kacheche to Chiweta.
The $154 million project is being funded under a blending operation whereby the European Union entrusted management of the same to EIB under a delegation agreement.
