By Jameson Chauluka:

UTM leader Saulos Chilima Sunday endorsed the latest July 4 and 5 2019 demonstrations which Human Rights Defenders Coalition has organised to push for Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah’s resignation.

Chilima endorsed the demonstrations during a ‘Thank You’ rally he held at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre.

“Holding demonstrations is a right of every citizen of this country. Even a baby protests by crying when unhappy with something. A baby does not need to be told when to cry,” he said.

The former State vice-president, who was accompanied by UTM vice-president Michael Usi and other top officials such as Patricia Kaliati, urged the protesters to maintain peace.

“The demonstrations have been organised by CSOs [civil society organisations] and we will join them in solidarity. It is wrong for anyone to accuse us of bringing disorder. Malawians have always held peaceful demonstrations—right from 1992,” Chilima said.

UTM and Malawi Congress Party have, citing irregularities, petitioned the High Court seeking nullification of presidential election results after Mec declared Peter Mutharika the winner.

The Constitutional Court, sitting in Lilongwe, is hearing the case whose full trial starts on July 29.
