Vice President Saulos Chilima goes back to the Financial Crimes Court this morning for hearing of his application, in which he wants his bail conditions varied.
Chilima’s lawyer Khumbo Soko told The Daily Times early this month that, among other things, the Vice President wants the bail condition that he be reporting to the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) once every three months removed and that he be given back his passport.
According to the application, Chilima wants the bail conditions varied because of his status in the society.
In his court application on July 3, Chilima, through his lawyer Kalekeni Kaphale, asked that the ACB furnish the Vice President with disclosures before he takes plea in the matter.
Kaphale said Chilima intends to raise a number of objections based on the disclosures.
In his ruling, Kapindu ordered the ACB to furnish Chilima with the disclosures within seven days so that the case could be ready for plea taking.
Kapindu queried the ACB for asking for an extension to issue the disclosures, wondering as to what the bureau has been doing since it arrested Chilima on November 25 2022.
Kapindu gave the ACB 21 days to furnish Chilima with the disclosures, adding that plea taking in the case will take place on August 1.
Chilima is accused of receiving $280,000 from Zuneth Sattar as a reward to assist Sattar’s Xaviar Limited to be awarded the Food Ration Packs Contract Reference Number MPS/ SB/16/04/2021, worth $7,875,000, by the Malawi Government, for the Malawi Police Service.
He was arrested by the ACB on November 25 2022.
