Vice President Saulos Chilima, who is on an official tour of the United States (US), has reiterated the importance of mindset change in national development efforts.

Chilima was speaking during an interaction with Malawians living in the US upon arrival in that country on Sunday.

Responding to a question on what projects US-based Malawians could embark on to pull the country out of the pit of poverty, Chilima said mindset change would be key to making Malawians realise that the country has potential to achieve its economic goals.

“Our obsession with negativity, pulling from different sides and obsession with the next elections at the expense of the next generation is disastrous,” Chilima said.

Malawians based in the US asked Chilima questions on a number of issues, ranging from passports renewal to national development issues.

While in the US, Chilima is expected to attend high-level meetings in New York, including a meeting on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) financing aimed at increasing the fiscal space for inclusive and sustainable recovery.
