Bankers Association of Malawi (Bam) has announced that its annual ‘Sports Day’ event returns this year on September 25, with the country’s vice president Saulos Chilima as guest of honour.
Bam Chief Executive Officer Lyness Nkungula, speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre yesterday, said that Chilima would take part in a fundraising golf tournament which has been organised for a charity cause.
“Golf has been part of sports activities during the event but, this year, it comes with an emphasis on charity as we need to buy desks for Koche Community Day Secondary School in Mangochi. We have decided to reach out to the school because it is in dire need of many things,” Nkungula said.
She said they intended to raise about K31 million for the charity initiative.
Nkungula further said that the event scheduled for Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, is open to other companies and organisations.
“We have realised that we do not live in isolation. We, as a banking community, rely on the society, hence opening up to companies and other organisations to take part,” she said.
Chairperson of the event Tiyese Kaimila said preparations were almost done.
“We will have, among other sporting events, football, netball, cycling and basketball. We will not have individual sports because of the Covid pandemic. Winners during the day will go home with assorted prizes,” Kaimila said.
Bam started organising the event in 2014 with the aim of offering employees time to interact and promote their mental and physical health.
