Vice-President Saulos Chilima has described the opening of Uromed Clinic in Lilongwe, which is a specialised private clinic, as a good step towards achieving Malawi’s 2063 agenda.

He said establishment of the healthcare facility would help Malawi achieve objective number 3 of Malawi Health Sector Strategic Plan (2017- 2022), which advocates availability of quality healthcare infrastructure and medical equipment in Malawi.

“We, as government, express our appreciation, having been informed that Uromed is owned by a group of young Malawian doctors. This is a good example of complimenting government work as well as creating employment for others. This is putting in practice the famous quote by John F. Kennedy that ‘Ask not what your country will do for you but rather what you will do for your country’,” Chilima said.

Chilima also lauded the clinic for acquiring state-of-the-art medical equipment such as Laser technology for kidney stones and bladder cancer treatment, an advanced treatment that is currently not available in Malawi.

Uromed Executive Director Dr Thandie Mabedi said the clinic was so specialised that patients that require special treatment would no longer be referred to India or South Africa.

“The coming in of Uromed clinic will eliminate the need to travel outside the country to access such care. This will mean reducing the amount of money the government spends on sending patients abroad,” Mabedi Said.
