Chilima made an unprecedented attack on his government in Ntchisi on Saturday during the celebration of Our Lady of Fatima. Chilima, who is
already in a fight for the party leadership ahead of 2019 polls, made a scathing attack, saying corruption is rampant.
“Ndimafuna ndinenepo za mchitidwe wakatangale ndi kuba, palibe angatsutse kuti zanyanya…tsopano dziko likachuluka atambwali lithapo. Ndi zija mumamva kuti band yagawana zida,” Chilima is reported to have said in chichewa.
But government spokesperson, Nicholas Dausi, hit back at Chilima and challenged him to come up with solutions and not only blame a government he is part of.
Dausi, who is also Information minister, said: “Ask him that, ‘sir, you are the Vice- President of the country. You are number two most powerful person in the country; so, when you say there is corruption, what do you mean? Are you not part of the same corrupt administration?’ Ask him. He has a mouth,” he said.
Chilima’s comments on Saturday have sparked a storm on the social media, attracting mixed views. Others have condemned him for coming late to criticise his boss while others have lauded him for being courageous.
“Saulos Chilima really you have realized today that your DPP government is full of thieves…you are a sight for sore eyes…an opportunist!” said Mbumba Chirwa on Facebook.
We could, however, not verify whether that was the real name of the face booker.
But political analysts Mustafa Hussein and Happy Kayuni of the University of Malawi backed Chilima and warned the DPP-led government to take Chilima’s criticism seriously.
Kayuni said Chilima’s remarks are a manifestation of the tension which is in the DPP.
“They should take him seriously because this is not Chakwera speaking. If it were Chakwera ,who is in the opposition, it would have been easy to dismiss him but the Vice- President is fully aware of what is happening in the government,” he said.
Hussein concurred with Kayuni, saying the DPP administration has to take Chilima very seriously since he has not spoken on corruption and DPP wrangles in a long time.
