The wonderful scenery of Mbawa Country Club provided the perfect avenue for Lions Club of Blantyre to stage a charity golf tournament to fundraise for about 200 needy students.
Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima, while enjoying impressive performance on the greens also demonstrated his agility to woo Victoria Hotel to make a rare donation of K2 million towards the course.
Chilima, who had earlier donated K100,000 towards the course, was expected to play three-holes but smartly dangled a carrot to his playing partners.
After teaming up with Fukani Gani, Shiraz Karim and Lions members Hilda Singo and Tarang Makhecha, Chilima, upon reaching the third hole which was to be his last, dared his colleagues to convince him to play two more holes.
Gani through Victoria Hotel swiftly responded by donating K2 million towards the course to enable Chilima to add two-more holes.
Chilima, who on this day drove himself, said the initiative demonstrates the resolve of a people striving towards creating a more caring society.
“I am also encouraged by the realisation that the private sector, the business community and individuals are taking a far more positive and optimistic view of the future of needy students in this country,” he said.
Chilima also hailed Lions Club of Blantyre for various projects including plans to construct additional hostels at Namikasi Girls Secondary School.
“The work that the club is doing is very commendable because, as His Excellency, President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has said over and over again, government alone cannot adequately address all the challenges that face us as a country,” he said.
Lions of Blantyre president, Hilda Singo, said their motto was to serve the community and they rely on partners to support their course.
Singo said the coming in of Chilima raised the profile of the initiative
“Our target was to raise over K6 million and we know that it is a tall order with just one event. However, through the golf tournament so far we have raised about K4 million which is quite substantial,” she said.
Meanwhile, Victoria Hotel director, Fukani Gani said they also believe in corporate social responsibility hence the donation.
“We believe if the Vice President left his tight schedule and play golf for this course then we must support such initiative. He is a very busy man he left everything to play golf and for this good course we had support. So this is why we have donated K2 million after a chat with the president,” he said.
Lions Club of Blantyre convener Tarang Makhecha said Chilima was humble and made a lively playing partner on the golf course.
Some of the companies that supported the golf were FMB and Capital Oil Refining Industry.
