Saulos Chilima took off his vice-presidency jacket to skipper Civo Bucks to a 56-55 win over Diplomats in a fundraising tournament at Civo Basketball Court in Lilongwe on Saturday.

Chilima, a competitive basketballer in his college days, graced the tournament, dubbed ‘Build a Court at Civo’, whose proceeds will go towards construction of a basketball court at the Lilongwe facility.

Chilima entertained the crowd with a solid performance, dribbling, twisting, turning and providing assists as his side beat the diplomats.

In a post-match interview, Chilima appealed for more support to basketball and sports in general.

“It was important for me to take part in the tournament to show that I am a true sportsman. I am sure the spectators enjoyed my performance during the game,” he said about the tournament, which Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) hosted.

The event realised K12 million out of the targeted K20 million, Cezobal Chairperson, Hellen Chabunya, confirmed.

Chabunya thanked individuals and companies for their support, saying they had realised enough to start constructing the court.

“We are really grateful to some companies and individuals for supporting us. On a special note, we would like to thank the Vice-President for taking a leading role in the tournament. His presence showed that he is committed to developing the sport,” Chabunya said.

The tournament also attracted high profile personalities from the diplomatic community and basketballers.
