Sauti Sol to perform at Lake of Stars Fest

Kenya’s popular afro-pop group Sauti Sol is the latest addition to the line-up of artists set to perform at this year’s Lake of Stars Festival to be held at Kabumba Hotel in Salima on September 28-30.

Apart from Sauti Sol, the other act that has been announced by the organisers is award-winning artist Fredokiss.

The organisers say in a press statement that they are happy to have one of Africa’s hottest groups as Lake of Stars Festival’s African headliner for the 15th anniversary.

Hailing from Kenya, the multi-award winning afro pop four piece group have attracted huge critical and commercial acclaim across the continent, including crowned Best African Group at the Afrima Awards and MTV Africa Music Awards, among others.

Their track ‘Live and Die in Afrika’ was included in BBC’s Africa’s Top 10 tracks in 2015.

Sauti Sol was initiated by vocalists Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano and Savara Mudigi in 2005.

Initially an acappella group, guitarist Polycarp Otieno joined before they named themselves Sauti.

The organisers say the band, whose music blends warm resonant pop with traditional Kenyan influences, will be performing a full live set the festival.

Lake of Stars Festival founder, Will Jameson, said they are delighted to be bringing the world class act.

“Like many people, I am a huge fan of Sauti Sol and I cannot think of a better place to enjoy their music than by the stunning shores of Lake Malawi surrounded by friends,” Jameson said.

He said he first had a taste of the group’s music when they invited them to the City of Stars event in Lilongwe in 2013.

Fredokiss, who is NBS Bank brand ambassador, will be making his first appearance at the Lake of Stars Festival, which makes a comeback after a one-year break.

Other acts which were already announced for the festival are Kim of Diamonds, Madalitso Band, George Kalukusha, Forus Crew, Michael Pedersen and Frightened Rabbit from Scotland.

The organisers have also announced that they have partnered TNM in this year’s festival.

The mobile company’s support is part of its long-term commitment towards promoting arts and culture.

TNM’s Head of Marketing, Sobhuza Ngwenya, said music is central to the country’s culture; hence, partnering Lake of Stars Festival.

“As a truly Malawian network, we are excited to be part of this international cultural event. This is arguably the biggest summer beach festival which attracts huge local and international patronage. Meanwhile, Lake of Stars organisers have said people stand a chance to save money on the festival through early bird tickets currently selling across the country.

The tickets are on sale at K27,000 until the end of June after which three-day ticket prices will increase to K37,000.

The organisers have also indicated that TNM Mpamba customers will be able to purchase discounted tickets for the festival at a later date.
